Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

I hope you had a lovely and refreshing summer break! As we step into the Autumn term, I am excited to be working with you and your child to make this part of Year One both enjoyable and productive.

The Year 1 team are:

  • Class Teacher: Mrs. Holmes
  • Class LSAs: Mrs. Manning and Mrs. Markwood
  • PPA cover: Mrs. Ray (Wednesdays)

Below, you’ll find a sample copy of our weekly timetable. While we aim to stick to it, occasional changes may happen to accommodate special activities or events.

English: Phonics remains an important focus this term. This video demonstrates Set 1, Set 2, and Set 3 sounds, which your child will cover this year.  We encourage you to read with your child using their Read, Write, Inc book and to note this in their reading diary. The children will need to read this on three separate occasions/days before it will be changed as the focus is to develop fluency and discussions around familiar books to build confidence. Reading for pleasure is also highly encouraged and a wonderful way to nurture a love for books! We will visit the library each week on a Monday so the children can bring home a book that they have chosen to share with you.

Writing skills will focus on letter formation, sentence formation, finger spacing, and punctuation. Our literacy texts this term include Where the Wild Things are and Burglar Bill.

Maths: We will explore place value to 20, addition and subtraction, and shape. Mental recall of numbers to 20 will be practiced daily.

RE: We will study Christianity (Church) and Judaism (Mitzvot) using the Emmanuel Project scheme.

History: We will Changes within Living Memory by finding out about Bures School in 1839 as a Victorian school. The children will compare how school was in the past and now.

Science: Our focus is on ‘Animals including humans,’ identifying different animals and grouping them into different categories as well as exploring their different diets.

Geography: We will be exploring our local area and answering the question ‘What is it like to live here?’. Our learning will be enriched by a local visit to ‘The Pumpkin Patch’ just before half term.

Art/DT: Children will learn sketching and printing techniques, and next half-term focus on mechanisms in Design and Technology.

PE: We will develop movement and social skills through movement and play, and Health and Wellbeing. PE days are Monday and Thursday (outdoor PE requires warm tracksuits and trainers). Please label clothing and ensure waterproof coats are sent daily.

As always, we’re here to support you. Feel free to catch us at the classroom door before or after school or message on Seesaw for any quick queries. For more in-depth discussions, we’re happy to arrange a meeting at your convenience.

Let’s work together to help your child achieve their goals and 'dream big' this term!
