Year 4

Autumn term

Welcome back!

We hope you had a lovely summer, soaking up the sunshine and taking a well needed rest. As we start a new academic year, we wanted to share our excitement of meeting you all and beginning our school year together.

Our Year 4 team:

  • Class Teacher: Miss Atkinson (Miss Pope on Monday)
  • Class LSAs: Mrs Bodi
  • PPA cover:  Miss Pope

Below, you’ll find a sample copy of our weekly timetable. While we aim to stick to it, occasional changes may happen to accommodate special activities or events.

English: Our literacy texts include Iron Man and Heard it in a tower block. This half-term we will be learning how to write a character description and setting. In addition, we will continue to develop our fluency and comprehension skills. Reading for pleasure is also highly encouraged and a wonderful way to nurture a love for books!

Maths: We now follow the Third space learning scheme. This term our learning includes Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Length and perimeter, Multiplication and division. Multiplication is an important topic for Year 4 and we appreciate you taking the time to practise these at home so your child can recall the multiplication facts up to 12x12.

Science: Our focus is on ‘Animals including humans,’ identifying different teeth and learning all about the digestive system. Next half-term we will be looking at the different states of matter.

RE:  We follow the Emmanuel Project scheme. This term’s Christian unit will focus on Salvation. After half term, we will focus on the Islam religion and will focus on the ‘Seal of Prophets’

Geography (Autumn Term 1): Within this topic we will be exploring Rainforests. This will involve locating them around the world, thinking about who lives there and answering the questions ‘Why are they important to us?’.

History (Autumn Term 2): We will look at Ancient Civilisations and Egypt in History, thinking about where the first civilisations began, exploring trade and looking at their architecture.

DT (Autumn 1) / Art (Autumn term 2): This half-term the children will focus on textiles in Design and Technology. Children will learn sketching from observation next half term.

French: Our topics this term are ‘Encore’ (national stereotype) and ‘Quelle heure est-il?’ (French activities).

Music: We will be learning body and tuned percussion, linking to our geography theme rainforest. Then, learning the hand jive within our rock and roll unit.

PSHE: Our learning this term being responsible, keeping safe and healthy, and finally feelings and emotions of jealousy.

Computing: Our learning this term is computer safety: online bullying and audio editing.

PE: In PE we are excited to begin Swimming on a Thursday morning. Our other session is on a Friday afternoon, and we will be focusing on Games/ and Invasion football. This is a great way for us to build our teamwork skills.

A few reminders for our new school year. Firstly, the children should not be bringing to school any toys, stationary or electronics. We provide all the equipment the children will need for their school day. Secondly, snack at break time should be fruit or vegetables only.

As always, we’re here to support you. Feel free to catch us at the classroom door before or after school for any quick queries. For more in-depth discussions, we’re happy to arrange a meeting.
