Year 5

Welcome back Year 5!
We hope you enjoyed a wonderful and restful Easter break, and that you are feeling ready for the exciting learning opportunities the summer term will bring. As we begin this new school year, we are looking forward to making it both enjoyable and rewarding.

Below, you’ll find a sample copy of our weekly timetable. While we aim to stick to it, occasional changes may happen to accommodate special activities or events.
English: Our literacy texts include Journey to Joburg, Long Walk to Freedom and Still, I Rise. We will be learning how to write a persuasive letter and a poem. We will continue to develop our fluency and comprehension skills. Reading for pleasure is also highly encouraged and a wonderful way to nurture a love for books!
Maths: Our learning this term includes Decimals, Properties of shapes, Volume, Position and direction, converting units and consolidation. We will also practice our arithmetic skills daily. Please help your children learn their times tables as this is essential for their fluency. Keep practicing on Times Tables Rock Stars.
Religious Education (RE): We follow the Emmanuel Project scheme. This term’s RE units include Buddhism: Enlightenment and Christianity: Eucharist. We will be visiting St Marys church for a lesson on Eucharist.
Science: This term we are learning about Forces and space: unbalanced forces and Animals: human timeline.
PSHE: Our learning this term is Image sharing and Growing and Changing: Puberty.
Geography: Our learning this half term will be based on the question ‘Would you like to live in a desert’.
History: We will be learning about Windrush. The children will learn what the Windrush story is and recognise the significant contributions of the British Caribbean community to the UK.
Design Technology (DT) & Art: In DT, we will develop a recipe and learn key cooking skills, with the outcome being making spaghetti bolognese. In Art, we will be making a 3D sculpture of a Greek God or Goddess.
Music: In music, we will be learning how to loop and remix on an online music software. We will also be learning about Musical Theatre, and the children will be making their own musical theatre inspired number.
French: Our topics this term are ‘En Vancance’ (On holiday) and ‘Chez Moi’ (Home).
PE: This term our PE topics are tennis, athletics, cricket and rounders.
Computing: Our learning this term is Programming: Selection in Quizzes.
